NEWSLETTER FOR TERM 1- |2026

Happy New Year and welcome back! We have had a wonderfully busy start to 2026, beginning with the exciting intake of new Grade 2 learners into the SHINE programme. Thanks to continued growth and support, we have expanded our reach from 431 children in 2025 to 495 learners this year, supported by our dedicated SHINE volunteers, 14 paid youth, and 6 new Nampak-sponsored youth.

TERM 4- YEAR END EDITION VOL 4 |2025

On Monday the 10th November all our Volunteers, Staff and Youth were treated to an evening on the Isle of ALOHA! The theme of the evening was WE’RE ALL GOING ON A SUMMER HOLIDAY! The decor was set, the Slow Lounge was available and the flight took off to an amazing start. “Chicken or Beef” menu requests were taken as the smooth landing took place. For a moment we all thought that island living was real! The evening progressed with fun, games and laughter. There was a tangible atmosphere of love and belonging as each table scurried around trying to photograph different items on the Scavenger Hunt list.

NEWSLETTER FOR TERM THREE OF 2025

As anticipated, our mid year assessment results were mind blowing!! Our learners coped very well and scores reflected that we make a huge difference! In just five months, we changed the projectile of the learners in our programme. We started the year with most of our learners “AT RISK”, with very few learners “ON LEVEL”. After scoring the assessments, we have very few learners still “AT RISK” and most learners “NEAR LEVEL” or “ON LEVEL”.

Thank you to our Volunteers, Staff and Youth for the many hours of reading, clapping, encouraging, listening, writing, playing and GIVING…………. You are seen and appreciated!

NEWSLETTER FOR TERM ONE OF 2025

Nampak did it again! We are extremely grateful to Nampak for their investment of Youth on our programme for 2024! We definitely could not have as significant an impact, if it wasn’t for the support and commitment from Nampak. The benefits and influence are far beyond what we all see.

With heavy hearts, we once again had to say goodbye to our Youth of 2024. Their farewell was celebrated at our Lakeside Centre, with a morning of fun Team Games, Minute to Win it style, and snacks to close the party. They shared what SHINE had meant to them over the past 12 months. The winners laughed, the losers scorned and we all cried during the morning!

NEWSLETTER FOR TERM FOUR OF 2024

Another year is coming to an end. In 2024 SHINE saw
the most learners in our literacy programme, most
literacy hours, most volunteer hours, most paid
youth, and most graduates from the literacy
programme who are now able to read and write and
understand what they are reading. We look back at
the year to acknowledge how far SHINE has come
and with hope for the future lives that will be
impacted by SHINE.

NEWSLETTER FOR TERM THREE OF 2024

We are on the home straight as we head into Term 4
for 2024. SHINE like any organisation is a growing
organism and as such experiences continous growth
and change.

Amanda Williams has taken up the baton and been
welcomed on to staff at SHINE as Literacy
Programme Manager, fulfilling the role that Vania
vacated.

NEWSLETTER FOR TERM TWO OF 2024

We are planting seeds for trees whose shade we may never sit under. Every literacy hour spent with a child may have an impact that we may not see the fruit of, but we choose to plant anyway, knowing that we are impacting lives and that there will be a harvest.

We are close to our current capacity of 480 learners, but the need is greater still.

SHINE NEWSLETTER TERM ONE 2024
