IMPACT GRADE 10, 11 & 12 TUTORING PROGRAMME

The reality in South Africa is that we do not have enough schools to accommodate all the country’s learners. As a result, the secondary schools in Reiger Park are put under more and more pressure because of the number of learners they are forced to enrol. This makes it extremely difficult for educators to be effective in classrooms with some classes having as many as 50 learners in them. If learners don’t understand the work being taught in these classes, it’s almost impossible for the educator to give them the attention they require.

Because this community is under resourced, these learners cannot afford extra tutoring. Our Tutoring Programme therefore exists to provide these learners with free tutoring. Every Saturday during the school term, 27 tutor volunteers who have a passion for education and justice, tutor hard-working Grade Grade 10, Grade 11 and Grade 12 learners from both Oosrand and Reiger Park Secondary Schools. The objective of the tutoring sessions are to assist these learners to excel in key subjects such as English, Maths, Physical Science and Accounting. It is the perfect platform for learners to ask questions, learn key principles and address concepts they are struggling with in a small group setting.

Our goal is to annually grow our volunteer base so that we can provide much-needed help to more of these learners.

ONLINE TUTORING PROGRAMME

We have recently equipped a computer centre at Reiger Park Secondary School. The learners who are enrolled in our Tutoring and Mentoring Programmes can now also come to the centre after school to practise exercises in subjects like Maths and Physical Science using our online tutoring programs. These online tutoring programs track the sections a learner is struggling with, allowing them to do additional work on the sections they are struggling with the most. They can also make use of the internet and book resources available at the centre for projects or use the computers to apply to universities online.

Catering

Our catering team supports the weekend tutoring program by preparing light meals and refreshments so that the students are fuelled to work at their best.
