SHINE was established as a non-profit organisation in 1997 to uplift local impoverished communities.

In 2010 we decided to move from a hand-out to a hand-up approach and that we would do this through EDUCATION.

We believe that by empowering children with quality education, they can be equipped to sustain themselves in the future.

As a result, we helped set up and maintain 3 early childhood development centres in Ramaphoza, Katlehong and Thokosa.

By 2016 we had helped set up three early childhood development centres and these had become self-sufficient.

We decided that we would most effectively and meaningfully impact our local community by addressing key shortfalls in the basic education system (Gr R – 12), and to that end we resolved to focus SHINE’s efforts on the community of Reiger Park.

In 2017 we started our Tutoring and Life Skill Workshop programmes in Grades 10, 11 and 12. It soon became clear to us that the lack of literacy and comprehension in these grades was a significant challenge and a barrier to learning. This led to further research and the decision to launch our literacy programme at Goede Hoop Primary School in 2019.

We continue to seek out opportunities to mobilise financial resources and volunteers to increase our impact in these key educational areas and to partner with other NGO’s to further our goal of empowering young people for a brighter future.
